According to ESPN, Andre Onana is reluctant to play in the AFCON 2023 in January because he wants to concentrate at United after his shaky start.
For Cameroonian football lovers, the AFCON, especially this particular one in Ivory Coast, means everything. If Onana gets to ditch it, the same Cameroonians who have showered him with a lot of support amid his difficult start at United are likely to be offended and turn their backs on him.
Imagine then if things still finally don’t go well at United! The international media will be calling the shots and he won’t have the moral backing from his countrymen to lift his spirits. Never minimise that moral support from your own people.
Aside from the patriotism factor, the national team is a place for recess – a place to recharge your batteries. Every player always needs his national team. Things may not be going as desired for you at your club but the national team offers you a lease of life and you get going again. There have been players who have earned bigger moves thanks to the national team. Being without the national team can result to quite a loss.
The greatest African players – the Eto’os, Drogbas, Yayas – always found a way to blend their international and club careers keeping everyone including themselves happy.
That is what Onana should look forward to, and if he fears losing his place at United, this should be an additional incentive for him to work even harder and be indispensable at United before the AFCON
Do you thin Andre Onana should play AFCON 2023 OR HE SHOULD FOCUS ON HIS CLUB?
